At the heart of BeWell is a fellow Crohnie:
"Hi! I am Amanda the founder of BeWell and I wanted to take the time to tell you a little bit about my Crohn's story and how BeWell was started.
I grew up with constant stomach aches and pain my whole life until I finally was taken into the hospital in the ER when I was 17 during my senior year.
That is when I was taken to Hershey Medical Center and I was there for a week, part of that in the ICU, and they were trying to figure out what's wrong with me. After that hospital stay, I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy where they said it looks like Crohn's disease.
After that hospital stay, I proceeded to take my medication, watch my diet, and it was probably over five years later until my next hospitalization, which was after a very stressful event in my life, along with also probably being on a smaller amount of medication than what was prescribed, thinking that I felt okay. After that week in the hospital, I probably had another five year or so time frame where I was not hospitalized.
I was managing my symptoms in remission until my most recent hospitalization in February 2022. This was my shortest stay, it was less than a week. I've always been sent into the hospital with nausea, vomiting, pain in my stomach, change and bowel habits, so those were the things that I had to look out for my symptoms when I know something's wrong. After this most recent hospitalization I have been symptom free again and this time I'm not planning to lessen my medication.
After my most recent hospitalization, I was put on a restrictive diet. While in that hospital, I was also very cold and there was a nurse shortage and I felt really bad asking nurses for more blankets. I started thinking about how a Crohn's store doesn't exist and while in the hospital I designed my own IBD journal because I needed a way to not only track my symptoms, but I wanted a place to actually list good food and bad food for me with my restricted diet. So the IBD Journal from BeWell was born!
Also in the hospital, I had the idea that it'd be great to have an IV zip hoodie where it could open in the front, it could open on the sleeves with easy access to my arms so that IVs could stay in and I could also be a little warmer than I was.
After having this idea for these products, I was thinking to myself what other products would make a Crohn's store because I wasn't aware of anything like that existing and how it would have been so nice to have the products that I just created if I had them 20 years ago when I was first diagnosed and the stress that probably would have been relieved to have these products.
Also I left the hospital without a name for this idea but after working on designing the products and getting them manufactured I was thinking about the name. It came to me that my GI doctor who whenever I see him instead of saying goodbye when I leave him he says be well!
That's where the name came from, in honor of my doctor who's been taking care of me for the past so many years and his message is also motivational and so when I see it on my products I think to everyone should be well and we should have lives that are easier by having these products that help us with IBD.
That is my current story. It started when I was 17, 20 years later, three hospitalizations over five colonoscopies. I'm still trying to figure out what works for me. Thank you for reading my story."
