The Kansas City Chiefs Wheelchair Football Team is one of the nation's most successful adaptive football programs. Since helping launch the USA Wheelchair Football League (USAWFL) in 2019, the team has reached every championship game and won three USAWFL Championships.
Wheelchair Football
- Players: Wheelchair Football is not just for people in wheelchairs, many amputees and people with other disabilities, that limit competition in "stand-up" football, play too.
- Adapted Rules and Equipment: It follows the rules of traditional American Football with adaptations to accommodate wheelchair users and others with disabilities. The game involves teams of seven players. Offense has lineman, a quarterback, and skill positions (wide receivers/running backs). Defense has pass rushers, linebackers, and defensive backs.
- Wheelchair Types: Players use sports wheelchairs that are specially designed for maneuverability on the field. These wheelchairs are typically lightweight and equipped with features like anti-tip wheels and reinforced frames to withstand the rigors of the game.
- Gameplay: The objective of wheelchair football remains the same as traditional football: to score by running or throwing the ball across the goalline. Players block, run routes and catch the ball, run the football, drop back for passes, pass rush, stop the run and cover recievers.
- Classifications: Similar to other adaptive sports, players are classified based on factors like upper body strength and mobility.
The program is part of Move United's USA Wheelchair Football League, made possible by the NFL/Bob Woodrow Foundation Salute to Service Program.
